It’s depressing me that summer is half over already, and we’ve had very few sunny days, so best to treasure the ones we do get. All we’ve seen is rain. It’s raining again as I type. I know you wish you could have rain, but too much is just as bad as not enough. I want some sun!
I feel the same Joni. We get a few warm days and it feels great then it feels like winter again. I actually feel better when we get to autumn and we know whats what. Im an autumn, winter spring person but summer gets to me with the up and down of the weather here in England. The paintings are great and made me wish I was sailing free on the waves (not that I sail 😦 )
Thanks Alison! I’m really having difficulty with the weather this year. We look forward to the summer and then it’s too hot and humid to enjoy it. Next week it’s supposed to be cooler and sunnier with autumn like temps (70) so maybe summer will be over soon and we’ll have an earlier fall. I can count on one hand how many nice beach days we’ve had. I tend to prefer the spring and fall seasons too. I haven’t been able to walk daily in this humidity so that isn’t helping either. I’ve tried after supper but the evenings are bad too.
Ah seems like you have the opposite problem to us. Its just been cloudy and overcast and cold here. One minute you are in shorts and t shirt the next you are searching out your jumpers and jeans. Crazy but we should be used to it by now.
Well, living by Lake Michigan, you’ve touched my heart. I love sailboats too. So, wonderful to see all the photos. Your Mom’s art, well, it’s BEAUTIFUL and touches the heart. She does a great job of capturing the waves, the storms, the calmness of sailing in each one. BRAVO!

Love the alternation of photos and paintings here. We have a serigraph of a lonely sailboat hanging in our master bedroom – a honeymoon gift to ourselves when we were in Hawaii many years ago. It’s so tranquil, like your photos. I always thought we’d take it down sooner or later in favor of something different. Not yet.
No – it rained that day, last Saturday, although they still had 188 boats entered. I tried to get pics on Monday as it was a lovely sunny day, but no sailboats out with sails, just one or two with sails down, so I had to cheat and use old photos! It hasn’t been a good summer for the beach. And today, more rain and humidity. I think you might be getting the same series of storms?
When I used to work in town each year on the Friday before race day we would close at lunch and go see all the boats but I think the last time I was in town during race week was 2008.
My husband said that being in the area on a freighter on race day is a nightmare.
Thankfully we didn’t get the 1-3 inches that was predicted to start overnight. We did get rain for a couple hours this morning though. We really DON’T need anymore rain.
I saw a big freighter on Sat. heading out into the lake, and this sailboat with the sails down going downriver came up really close to it in the opposite direction, and the freighter sounded his horn. How stupid, I thought, was he doing? Trying to ride the wake? So I can imagine 188 boats and all the ones not participating too. We got rain but not too much either. I’m looking forward to it being cooler tomorrow.
What a beautiful and Summery post Joni. It makes me think of Summer in the past – a season you could count on for sunny, gorgeous days, marred only by the occasional garden-variety rainstorm. None of these volatile weather events and endless days of horrid heat and humidity. The weather was choppy for sailing and it amazes me to see photos of sailboats listing in a big wind … I’d be terrified to ride in one as I can’t swim. I love all your mom’s sailboats photos – all looking very serene. Yesterday was such a beautiful day and the walk I took at Lake Erie Metropark was a different route … all the way to the Marina which has mostly sailboats, a few pontoon boats there. Not one boat was out of the slip on such a gorgeous morning … I did not understand that at all. Seeing you mention the regatta, the Port Huron to Mackinac Island sailboat race was last weekend. They were worried since we had the severe weather predicted. They all went anyway and while the weather raged here with four tornadoes, at the end of the race, the boaters said it was the best weather yet breeze wise and very enjoyable. They must all be seasoned sailors (I would have stayed home).

I forgot about the Mackinac race until Monday when I read there were 188 entries, (up from last year but down from normal) but Sat, race day was rainy and miserable so I imagine very few spectators. When we went up on Monday it was beautiful with a lovely breeze, so they probably sailed north out of the miserable weather. I was sick on the bigger Windjammer boat so I don’t think I would ever try a smaller sailboat, as I can’t swim either and the current is rough there.
That could be – especially in the case of the larger sailboats and they had a few pontoon boots in the harbor as well. I wanted to take mostly pics of the sailboats as they cast a nice reflection on the water. I didn’t see one boat out of their slip. Very odd, but that makes sense. Last Saturday morning they were already forecasting the bad weather to begin at 3:00 p.m. so they said “hope the boats in the race will be fine” so I really didn’t understand why they said it was one of the better weather days for the race? My boss/wife took a cataraman cruise around the Great Barrier Reef. He said they chose it because it got closer than a cruise ship could and they would anchor the boat and could go into the water and scuba dive … him/wife are both swimmers. That would not be my cup of tea … it was a big boat, but not THAT big.
I love these. They were perfectly timed when you published, but convey a somewhat melancholy feeling for those of us who get here in the second half of August.

You are now officially caught up on my blog, as I’ve not posted anything since the end of July. I’ve had company for the month of August which while nice has disrupted my writing routine, and while I’m a bit OCD about missing my weekly deadline, now that I’ve missed 3 weeks I’m liking the break. Maybe Sept. will have me back at school…..

It is a foolish thing to do. They are putting their lives at risk. It takes time for those freighters to change course.
