A little soundtrack for our Canadian Thanksgiving which is the second weekend of October.

Thanks for the “Posh Tea” card Linda! It was lovely. I just finished off the last piece of apple pie. While I was pleased with my homemade pie (except for the crust which I bought), the “Butterball” turkey was not that great. Mom wanted a whole turkey this year, but it was kind of greasy, for a 10 lbs bird. I think in the future I’ll stick with the turkey breast – better taste and less clean-up. It was a lot of work for not many left-overs. I can’t believe the weather today – positively balmy, and not very Thanksgiving like.
We always had the turkey breast, even when my father was here. There is a lot of work involved and this was much easier. My mom used to make Rock Cornish Hens for Christmas sometimes – now there’s a lot of bother too, for such a tiny amount of meat and greasy with a capital G. My parents and I all liked white meat and they were a little dark, tasted like duck. It was 72 when I returned from walking at 10:00 a.m. – crazy. We were supposed to have severe weather tonight, but I think that has fizzled out for SE Michigan. I knew you’d like “Posh Tea” Joni – those pink roses are just like you’d have if you had an English country garden and estate.
I only cooked Cornish Game Hens once – I think they were a fad in the 80’s – and once was enough! I would like to have an English country garden and estate….along with a gardener!
They were messy and splattered all over. My mom stuffed them brown/wild rice with raisins. My mom made them once and said “never again!” But my father wanted them and invited a friend from work and his wife for Christmas dinner and we had them … my mom and I were cleaning up for hours – the wife went into the other room with the men. That sounds appealing to me too.
Susan Branch has a book about her trip to the English countryside and it was so nice. Lots of photos interspersed with her handwriting, just like on her blog. I think that’s why she was planning another trip only this time to more areas.
If I remember correctly, doesn’t she have quite a following over in England and goes to a bookstore and does a reading? This was awhile ago, but I can picture her surrounded by women in a small book store.
Yes, she has a following there. She wrote a book called A Fine Romance, about her trip to England about five years ago. They were there for five months in the springtime. I was able to read it as I got the library to order a copy – although I don’t know how they were able to order it. It was a travel diary…..like a blog with photos and just like you would imagine rural England to be, all cottages and pubs and tea and lambs etc. I believe her second trip next year is to do another book only with more stops like Ireland and Scotland. She can probably write it off as a business expense! But as she doesn’t like to fly, they took a luxury ocean liner across – the Queen Elizabeth?
Wow – yes, must be nice and these days from what I hear with airline travel, that might be preferable, though COVID and/or norovirus might be worrisome. I heard this morning on the news about all the pilots should have a crash course after messing up some basic things that they may be rusty on. I’m wondering if they could parlay that ocean passage with some of her followers? We have a local morning show personality who hosts a trip every year where listeners go on the cruise and/or tour to be near him. They didn’t have it last year, but they have a cruise scheduled.
Yes, she’s already posted re her followers going on the same cruise ship, and apparently 75 of them have already signed up! Same with the tour package in England. You wouldn’t catch me on a cruise again (I’ve done two)….too many people and too scheduled/regimented. Plus friend of mine had their cruise shortened because of Norwalk virus. So they got a voucher for 50% of another….
I guess I am not surprised that people want to do that who really like her. Interesting. I was on two cruises myself and a short Bahamas cruise with my parents in 1972. But the cruises today are more like cities, rather than floating hotels. A friend of mine and her husband traveled a lot, (a European visit and a cruise each year, plus a lot of domestic travel) before she had a near-fatal stroke in April this year. One of the last cruises they were on, was some state-of-the-art, largest cruise ship built to date. She had pictures of inside/outside and taken of it docked in port. The ship was massive! I never remember there being Norovirus when I was on cruises back in the early 80s – same for you? I wonder why?
That’s true, but maybe it’s because there are just way too many people on the ships – I wouldn’t want to be around that many people, and once it starts it spreads quickly. I’m guessing SB must have groupies or die-hard fans – but she makes clear that the fraternizing will be limited in scope.
I know they resumed cruises recently – one line, maybe out of Miami. I heard it out of the corner of my ear, but not interested in going. They have a nice cruise down the Eastern Seaboard for viewing the Fall colors – a small ship. I thought that would be nice. Of course, you could pick the wrong week to go see the colors when you book months in advance. Our leaf colors in Michigan are at least a week behind. I was at Council Point Park today taking photos and found only one tree had turned. It always turns first and drops its leaves before the others. I would not want to be around that many people again. I don’t think COVID will ever go away completely … the thought of traveling like we did years ago seems like a dream now. That’s interesting SB makes it clear that she needs her “me time” – I actually would think they would pay dearly for the privilege of socializing with her the entire crossing. I wonder if she makes a mistake doing that? I get she might want to take her meals with her husband and have some privacy, but I would feel she should indulge her fans who booked the trip to interact with her.
We are a week behind in leaf colors. One tree was colorful yesterday at the Park – that’s it and now say it will be nice this coming weekend. Do I wait an extra week to Halloween weekend to try to get some Fall colors at larger parks, or will Mother Nature snub me and give me rain that weekend? Getting out early in the morning during the week doesn’t work as the sunrises are too late now.
I think the problem is we haven’t had any frosty nights, at least here, so I see some leaves just dropping as they’ve dried up, but not much color. I want to do a leaf-peeping blog too….
They’ve had a few homecoming dances at the Taylor schools, so those students go to Heritage Park and pose at the gazebo or covered bridge. There is a photographer who publishes regular posts of photos he takes at that venue, so he’s been posting homecoming pics. Not one tree has turned. I had thought of going this weekend … I have heard it now may rain both days. Two reasons not to go there. The car needs a long run – I HAD thought of going to Lake Erie Metropark (32-mile roundtrip). My mom and I took a trip to northern Michigan on year … everyone told us what week would be best to go. I had to put in for vacation months ahead of time. Got up there and not one tree had turned … this was long before climate change.
Yes, I was a little annoyed about it – I may just finish up all the grocery shopping and load in some pantry stuff like paper towels, peanuts to avoid going back later. Make the most of tomorrow!
That was a clever card by JL. I liked how the turkey fanned its tail feathers out at the end and I think it turned into a cornucopia as a finale if I remember correctly.
Happy belated Thanksgiving! We don’t have ours for another 3 weeks, so this is getting me in the mood. I do enjoy some good old fashioned bluegrass music, so thanks for finding and sharing this one.
This reminds me that we had better get going on plans at our house. Now that we have a pair of fiancés and some almost-in-laws the planning gets more tricky.
The more the better at Thanksgiving! Until it becomes every second year alternate parents. Your American thanksgiving is too close to Christmas – I like to space my turkeys out!
