#April in Paris, #Pandemic Bangs – Wordless Wednesday

Let your photo(s) tell your story.

Pandemic Bangs -April in Paris

My neighbor made me a mask which happened to coordinate with my French striped top….so it’s time for my annual Parisian blog.

Pandemic Bangs

A mask can be useful as a guide when cutting your own pandemic bangs – just cut straight across, a quarter inch above the mask.

April in Paris - Macron

You cannot however eat a macaron wearing a mask….

Coffee

or sip a cafe creme….but you can save money on red lipstick.

Pandemic Bangs

Or you can just let your bangs grow and go out on Halloween as Cousin It!

Thanks Debbie….I think I did a pretty good job of cutting them, even though I didn’t have good scissors, just small manicure ones. They could be shorter. Hairdresser always does them at my eyebrows, and she point-cuts into them, but that would be way beyond my talents! I hope you are well and safe.

Thanks Annie. For years I struggled with my hair, it’s thick but wavy but not in a nice way, so I wore my hair short. Then I found a hairdresser who convinced me to grow it out into a bob and straighten it. But you know when you get to a certain age, it’s not the hair that’s the problem it’s the face….so the mask can be a good thing!

Actually, I love the look. My hair is growing from a pixie, so it’ll take much long to get much longer, but the bangs are like yours. Yes, I’ve snipped them, too, but I don’t dare try the angles that Amie (hairdresser) does.

And, what do you know! I have a couple of striped shirts like yours, great with jeans and denim shoes.

I like stripes too and have several of those French boatneck tops which are good with jeans. For years I wore my hair short and curly/wavy, but now I think those hair straightener wands are the best thing ever made.

Thanks Ally. I didn’t have anything written for this week, so those Wordless Wednesdays can fill in the gap. I wore my mask to the grocery store today and had to stop and think when I got ready this morning – no lip stuff.

This was a cute post Joni. Clever how you got all the French props in one picture. I can’t take a selfie as I have no smartphone. Funny how your bangs almost meet the mask! Never cut your bangs wet as they’ll shrink up – my parents did that to me back in the day. There they stood, on either side of me, with their scissors and some tape and I had bangs almost up to my hairline. I like the color of your hair and at a glance I thought it was Taylor Swift masked up in the picture. 🙂

Taylor Swift! I wish! I wish I was that age again. The bangs should be shorter…..I hack away at them a bit every time I wash it. I had the mask on higher than normal to hide my face, as I’m not really comfortable with posting selfies. I got the idea for the post as I usually do a Paris post in April, and my neighbor who sews made me a black and white mask, and I never wear black or white tops, but happened to have a striped tshirt I got on sale at Reitmans for $10, so I put that one, and stood in front of my Paris sign in the front hallway. You can tell I have too much time on my hands…..

Yes I wish I was her age too – I’ll send you a picture of her with deep bangs and straight hair. She has more of a bob now, but long bangs. Google some images of her because after she cut her signature long curly locks, she had long bangs like yours. I don’t know why I thought you had curly hair. I have no current pictures of me in my blog – just older pictures and I can’t take a selfie as I have a flip phone. I don’t even know if it has a camera or not. Well, it was a good excuse to have a macaron. It is okay to have too much time on your hands – the weather is not conducive for going outside this week.

I do have curly hair Linda! It’s just straightened with the straightener wand. Actually, the top of my hair is fairly straight but the back and sides are a mass of waves, and not nice waves either, so it’s just easier to straighten the whole thing so it matches.
I used to perm the top so it would match the bottom, when perms were in. I think straighteners are the best things every invented. I also used to wear it up in a ponytail when it was longer, until a few years ago, when it started to get thinner at the temples, so now I only do that if I’m at home or wearing a hat.

I thought we were writing back and forth one time and you said you had to dry it as otherwise it would be frizzy. My hair was not thick so I always put curlers in – every day – now too. But my hair was layered so that the curled layers made it look thicker. I had “spot perms” too – on top to give my hair body and to give it lift, but it didn’t really help. I am a little worried as I’ve been losing hair like crazy over the Winter. I mentioned it to Jill when I went last October – she said it was normal. But this is more than normal – I’ve lost a lot of hair! My mom had the same problem and I remember when we got internet at work and I went to the “PDR” online, I was on that site, looking at all the drugs she was on for hair loss. The best I could come up with was that she took OTC Pepcid at that time. She later went to Nexium the last few years of her life. She must have had a mild thyroid problem as she was on Synthroid, the lowest dose, and if memory services me right, it may have been 0.25 mg … doctor said he had her on the lowest dosage is what I remember. When I was Googling around for reasons for hair loss – this time for me, I saw thyroid (hypothyroidism) was a cause. But she was on Synthroid so that could not have been the reason. Perhaps it is age. I don’t like it but there are worse things that could happen – that’s how I’m going to look at it – I’m not happy with it now. I need to whack off a little from the bottom – maybe this weekend. Jill and Jim (husband and wife who own the salon I go to) asked their customers to follow on Facebook. I have sent them a few funny bad haircut memes I’ve run across … Jim wrote back and said “hang in there – don’t cut your hair – when we come back it will be one customer per hour then we have to sanitize everywhere they touched” – this will be really interesting whenever it happens. We have a social distancing state of emergency in place now til May 28th. The parks were not closed by our governor, but our mayor.

Hypothyroidism is common in older people, and also hair loss for no reason other than old age. My mom has the same problem, thick at the back, but thinner on top and temples. My hair is so thick, that I let it air dry for an hour, then finish it with the blow dryer to semi-straighten it, then use the hot straightener wand, so the whole procedure is like 2 1/2 hours.

I remember researching it for my mom – she had so many other medical problems, but she had always had a full head of hair, naturally curly and suddenly you could see her scalp. She kept it almost like a man after the hair loss. I hope that doesn’t happen to me – I am trying to keep it in perspective that all around me I hear of or know people with life-threatening illnesses I’m not referring to COVID-19, just incidences of cancer mostly, dementia as well. But hearing of health people dropping dead from COVID-19 shakes me to the core to be honest.

Jo, usually they monitor and adjust the dosage, (there’s a wide range of different strengths), based on blood tests? Some doctors do them annually if the patient is stable, others every few months. if the dose needs changing. The blood test guides the doctor in what dose to order. You could check with your doctor the next time you see him/her? The doctors offices are all closed now but for virtual or phone visits for emergencies. I have noticed my hair thinning at the temples some, which is a common problem, kind of like male pattern baldness in men.

For me it would be the coffee! I tried a macaron once, and while a very pretty blue color, I was disappointed in the taste. It was from a fancy bakery which has since gone out of business, but somehow I expected something a bit more exciting for $2.50 a cookie!

I forgot to say that the green one in my picture had been in my cupboard for a few months, which is why it was dry and crumbling. I had bought it at the grocery store and forgot it needed refrigerating (I guess because of the filling), but I think it was $2 also. Yes, I suspect they are something which takes time to make and color.

No, I threw it out! It was all crumbly in the box and dried out. Each one came in a pretty colored box and I had forgotten I picked them up in the refrigerated section when I unpacked the groceries, so they sat in the cupboard for a few months! The filling must have cream….

Your French selfie looks much nicer than mine would, which would look like someone attached a mask to a dirty mop.

My Mrs hates my hair too short, but I may have to resort to the clippers with the No. 8 guard before my ears disappear altogether.

I noticed the other day when our PM Trudeau was giving his daily pep talk speech how long his hair was getting, and he is known for his good hair, but it was getting out of control…..I suppose he wants to set a good example. I’m hoping hair salons will be open by the end of May…

Back to the hair conversation: Last night, I had finally HAD IT with the back growing way too fast and thick while the top shed constant strands. So, while Hubby made a quick run to the store for a single loaf of bread (wearing his mask), I hacked it off. Now, so much better all over as the shortened back ala 1920s style makes the rest appear fuller. And neck cooler, too. That style used to be called the “Sassoon” in the ’60s, I believe. It looked like a rounded close-fitted cap with long sides angled forward over the cheeks. I’m working on growing that style out from last summer’s pixie.

I remember the Sassoon look, Jo. You’re hair must be straight? although just googling now, some people like Mia Farrow had curly versions. You are very brave, cutting the back. My mother cuts hers at the back too, something I don’t think I could do. At least it is cooler, if warm weather ever shows up – in the 40’s here today and all week, with possibly wet snow on Friday???? Highly unusual….

Wet snow may melt faster and soak your garden beds — you can hope! Reminds me of May Sarton’s published journals, written from her home in Maine, where daffodils didn’t show themselves until the month of May. Snow in May was nothing unusual for her area. Instead of singing the old nursery rhyme “Rain, rain, go away . . . ,” sing SNOW, snow, go away. DON’T come another day.” 😉

I read one of May Sarton’s journals many years ago…..today it was 5 C about 40F with a cold north wind, but bright and sunny so I walked anyway. The rhyme worked….not it may just be rain on Friday!
