The Literary Salon – Enchanted April

Last April I posted about a delightful book, Enchanted April by Elizabeth Von Arnin, and since it is April again, I thought this would be a good selection for this month’s Literary Review.    Although this book was written almost a hundred years ago, it’s a favorite of mine for it’s theme of beauty and hope, and how a lovely environment can renew one’s life and perspective.  Here’s a link to the blog……Enchanted April.    I hope your April has been enchanting too!

The Enchanted AprilThe Enchanted April by Elizabeth von Arnim

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I absolutely loved this book, but I had watched the movie first. A timeless tale with a lovely story line and such vivid descriptions of flowers, gardens and beautiful countryside that you almost felt like you were there.

If you like period pieces it’s a lovely movie, although when I re-watched it I was struck by how much film quality has improved, also I would have re-cast some of the actors. More to read, more to watch is good! But I find now that the weather is nicer (although not as nice as it could be for spring) I am less inclined to be indoors, reading, watching tv or blogging.
Save the movie for some hot humid day in summer when you don’t want to go out!

I have just read your 2018 blog and watched the accompanying trailer and realise that I watched the film many years ago and remember it a wonderful film. I shall have to have a hunt and see if I have the film or if I only watched it on TV, and watch it again. I had no idea it was from a book so have added it to my wish list next time I place an Amazon order – sadly the local bookshops carry only a very limited range of old books/classics so anything that isn’t new or hugely popular has to come from Amazon.
I loved the little of Italy I have visited – Florence, Rome and Venice, with day trips to Pompeii and Pisa. It is such a romantic country. You definitely can’t have too much beauty… Florence and Venice are definite musts, if you haven’t managed to get there in the last year. Also, if you haven’t seen it already, you need to watch ‘Room with a View’, set partly in Florence (EM Forster), which is among my all-time favourite (costume drama) films.

I had a problem leaving the comment on the linked site so will leave it here: Unfortunately my April has not been enchanted and I wonder to myself for the umpteenth time while I’ve never heard of this book … it’s been around long enough. Haven’t heard of the movie either … I think I need to crawl out from under my rock more! I like how you took the pictures and put them into this blog post as well Joni.

The Italian villa picture is one of my mother’s paintings, and one of my favourites. It’s an old and obscure book and movie so I don’t expect anyone to have heard of it! I guess I should have written that April here hasn’t exactly been enchanting, but I had prepared the draft the first of April when I was optimistic it might be! The wind is certainly howling out there tonight……I hope we both don’t wake up to snow tomorrow as that would just be too depressing for words…

I do like how you include those paintings that you mom does – it enhances the post(s) Joni. Does your mom see these posts too? I seem to think that you one time said she did not have internet (this was when you stayed there when your power went out). So you print out the blog posts for your mom to see? Back in the beginning of April, when they decided the weather resembled a lion, we thought it would exit like a lamb. Not so unfortunately. We are still getting 1-2 inches of slushy snow tonight and maybe a little more Monday into Tuesday, though they are sketchy on that. I went grocery shopping this morning – I weighed going tomorrow afternoon, but prefer to go in the morning when it is less crowded. Tomorrow, if I had waited, assuming we hit 56 and the snow melts as they promise, the after-church crowd comes and it is busy. I usually can do small shoppings on a weekday morning before work, but had more to get and until the sun gets up a little earlier (or bothers to show up at all) I had to go today. I did rack up 3.2 miles, but not impressive. The weather is depressing and the more I read this is the result of climate change, the more I despair. I hope to get a walk in tomorrow – I guess I could go to the Park in the morning – snow just on the grass. I hope I don’t have to drag out boots again!

I brought her over to my house on Thursday and showed her some pictures on the computer, and the blog, esp the Dutch one, and how I incorporated her pictures…..I showed her the past 6 or 7 blogs, but she couldn’t read the writing – she finds my 13 inch screen too small. She doesn’t do much reading anymore, just crossword puzzles, and some of the newspaper, but the print on our local paper is too faint. So if i printed them out, it’s not likely she could read much of it anyway. She says her eyes get tired when she reads more than a few minutes – from old age, dryness and her glaucoma. Surprisingly her poor eyesight does not affect her painting much, something I cannot figure out, nor can her eye doctor in London. Maybe it is because it is a different distance? I have steps into my house and in my house, so she doesn’t come over very often, but will come on Monday when I have a kitchen design consultant coming. Yes I finally found something I liked in a kitchen showroom, although I might not like the price the lady assured me they cater to every budget! We did not get any snow last night, (although parts of Ontario did to the northwest) but may tonight. I managed to get in a half hour walk before supper.

I’m glad your mom got to see how you spotlight her work though, even if she can’t see it well. How about using a page magnifier Joni? My mom used that for some things like recipes to make it easier to see. Even a regular magnifying glass, but the page magnifier worked really well. They have different types, including hands-free for needlework, or lighted-up types, but my mom’s was just a simple one, the first one at this link:
        https://www.webrn-maculardegeneration.com/full-page-magnifier.html
That is odd that poor eyesight does not affect the painting, but maybe it is more just the typeface. I find the typeface here in the comments portion of the Notifications is very tiny and hard to see. Congratulations on finding something at the kitchen showroom – the last person you had it was her first day as I recall. That’s good you got a 1/2 hour walk in – by now we would have had more miles than we do now … in a normal weather year, anyway.

Thanks for the link! I’ll look through them….maybe something larger. We’ve been through a number of magnifiers, and I even asked the last time we were in London about the low vision clinic, and the doctor said she wasn’t a candidate for that unless we wanted to waste money. I think the main thing is her eyes get tired after reading more than five minutes, but then my mom was not really a reader, so it might just be an excuse! She does love her TV news shows though.

You’re welcome Joni – I didn’t realize you had tried the magnifiers. I just saw the page-sized one at a stationery store and it worked well for my mom. My mom also had a regular magnifying glass that she kept on hand if she needed the White Pages. Did you know that a magnifying glass can catch paper on fire Joni? We had a story here years ago about a woman who left the magnifying glass on some papers on the counter and the sun was streaming through the window and the sunbeams shone on the magnifying glass and it caught fire on the paper. My mom never left her magnifying glass on the table anymore after that. My mom used to like her news shows too. That part I miss about having TV, but that’s all – I know that 48 hours is online but I never think to watch it. We used to watch it and 60 Minutes and 20/20 … liked 20/20. 60 Minutes is available on the radio and I listen to it if it is not political and if I like the story (human interest or animal) I’ll go back and watch it online. We never missed 60 Minutes back in the day when the “regulars” were on there … all gone now like Mike Wallace, Morley Safer, Ed Bradley – only Leslie Stahl from the longstanding group now.

I mentioned it to her today about the page sized one and she said she was willing to try that one, if I can find it. I wish we had a stationary store here, I may try Staples. My mom knew that about the magnifying glass and she always keeps hers tucked away under a cushion or covered up with a cloth. I remember the cruel boys at grade school using one to burn ants with it too! We used to watch 60 minutes too, but I haven’t for years. Is Diane Sawyer on it still or is that a different show? I heard that she interviewed the mother of one of the Columbine murderers, but the reviews of the womans book (it’s the 20th anniversary) were so disturbing, it’s not something I would ever read.

I got my mom’s downtown at Gail’s office supply and they went out of business years ago. I’ll bet Staples has them or even a good store may? I didn’t know about burning ants – that is mean and the sun would be hotter outside than coming through the window. No Diane Sawyer went to another channel and I think it was 7 and it might have been when she was on the nightly news. She was the main night time anchor for a while and then they brought in a male anchor. I always liked her. I never heard that interview … I wonder why as we were watching it at that time, unless it was pre-empted by football. Football used to make it start as late as one or more hours late … a problem if you taped it! Good luck with your kitchen consultation tomorrow Joni.

This interview was just the other day, in honour of the 20th anniversary of Columbine. I watched the mother on a TED talk, and then later heard that Diane Sawyer had interviewed her about her new book. Thanks Linda – go to bed and get some rest, almost 11.

OK, didn’t know that – they had some interviews on CBS news last week for the 20th anniversary. Did you hear any interviews with the teacher who attended the memorial service last week? He said he was only there one year when the massacre occurred? Back then we were so shocked weren’t we? Look how many, school or otherwise, have happened since. The Parkland murders last year were tragic on their own, but then last month two students took their own lives and the father of one of the kids killed in the Sandy Hook school shooting took his own life. Very sad and very scary. I am turning in now – Shelley’s posts show up in reader and also in my notifications (not sure why – maybe how I followered her) … read that post and that is it … must scurry off to bed and I wish I had walked yesterday and wrote about it and done groceries today (Sunday afternoons are always busy and I assumed I’d be going Sunday afternoon). Now off to bed before I am unable to peel myself from this seat. It is a small stool at this computer – not comfortable at all!

Well I comment a lot too – we both comment a lot and there is always a topic we have in common or want to write each other about. Do not worry about it at all. I mess myself up on weekends if I go on a walk both days of the weekend and write a post both days, especially if there are lots of pictures, like yesterday. But yesterday was bad as I got a late start. I am walking in a 5K at that park on May 11th and I wasn’t sure where it was so I went to check it out and wanted to do so in case it rains next weekend. They say it will be dray all next weekend (that probably means it will rain Mother’s Day weekend … the 5K is Mother’s Day weekend). I didn’t want to mention it in my post because I don’t like to say when I am away from the house since my posts are published online at Patch and the local paper. I’m pretty sure that people reading about squirrels and birds are not going to be breaking in, but still want to be careful.
I hope it stops raining before that 5K as well because the trail was awfully wet and muddy there. It is getting hard to get it all done to be honest Joni. See, I never had this happening the first 4 1/2 years and suddenly blogging took off in November of 2017.
I feel like I don’t completely finish any project any more as I am flitting from here to there and always thinking about going for a walk (or not going due to the weather), or my next blog post and what I’ll write about.
I feel half the time that I’m flying by the seat of my pants, no organization and I truly don’t like the feeling. I’ve felt like I’ve bitten off more than I can chew with the blogging many days. I don’t mind staying up late occasionally, but it was getting so that bed was at midnight and the alarm going off at 5:00 a.m. was not working out well, I’d get up and put the radio on to hear the news and fall asleep, waking up about an hour later. And I know in my heart that it is not good for my arm sitting here all the extra hours – that much is true too. I think of this dilemma every day to be honest, but not willing to give it up, but thinking I need to manage my time much better. I don’t like the house messy and cluttered either and the only time it looks nice is when the weather is bad and I stay indoors … now that is not good!

Yes we do have a lot in common to talk about, and sisters must keep in touch! What if you just blogged once a week until you get caught up a bit, here and at work and that might help rest your arm a bit. Plus the weather is soon to be nicer (we hope), and I find many of the bloggers I follow are not posting as much at certain times of the year. I only post once a week, (Thurs usually), but have slacked off and have nothing ahead, although plenty of topics in mind. Now with the renovating to figure out, the yard to do, the garage needs cleaning out, and I am trying to clean some of my mom’s rooms, I don’t even know when I found time to work, which you are still doing! What I have done when I got overwhelmed was to not read as much on the Reader, and I unfollowed some people who hadn’t posted in months, and /or who had never ever looked at mine, so my Reader is not as full. I read about ten to 15 people regularly, and sometimes I comment, but often I don’t. Most of these people blog once a week, so I know what day to look for their posts. I also follow some people daily, but their posts are short, not at all like my 3000 word posts. I know you try to be a polite blogger and comment each time, but sometimes it’s just not possible to comment on everyone’s. As long as you do sometimes I think people understand. We all have time constraints. I wonder how many people will abandon ship once they force this new editor on us? Because it’s certainly taking the fun out of it.

I stopped following a few people recently and I have people I comment on their posts and they don’t comment on mine, so I am slowly just giving it a “like” and that’s it and slowly withdrawing. I agree with you and I need to step away from the computer … I used to do laundry in the morning before walking, or a little food prep, maybe even a little housework in the mornings during the week and this is why I don’t seem to get anything done anymore. I’ve tried to figure out the best use of my time – do I stay up late and catch up and go to bed at midnight (not good as I don’t want to get up with the alarm) and I have people who comment from another time zone (as you probably do) so in the morning those people have already been up and commenting on the latest post. And I check in at work every morning to ensure the computer system is working. I don’t like to communicate on my blog during the work day, unless my boss is on vacation and I have nothing to do. Not that I’m a goody two shoes, but he is a labor attorney and I have worked on many cases where people got in trouble for using social media during the work day. I don’t think I would be fired and he does not know the name of my blog – I one time told him I started a blog and he said “are you getting paid for it?” I was mad he asked that and have never said anything more about it. I play things safely. But if I have nothing to do, I will come here. Anyway, it is hard to keep up – I will take your advice, no more than three blog posts a week. And sometimes, if I do a Saturday and a Sunday post (unless it is a long holiday), by Sunday night I am usually behind in Reader and in e-mail too (I have a few friends I e-mail with and get behind with them). So I feel like a hamster on a wheel sometimes. But other people do it – why do I get behind? I don’t read – I used to love to read? Sigh. Yes, some posts are really short, ours tend to be long and more involved, so a lot of work is put into creating them too. I think on a weekend, there should be a Saturday post, and the other one, maybe during the week? And if there is a third post, maybe on Thursday perhaps? I looked in Reader – I did some of the Monday ones but not all and now there are Tuesday ones.

I think the other people who do it, are not also working too! When you say you work part-time is it during a set time, or is some of it flex-time? I know my posts are too long and that turns people off, but I write primarily for myself. If I’m not satisfied with a post, I don’t post it until I am. If other people enjoy it, that’s great, but not my primary reason for writing it. It’s ahrd to explain. Diane of Diane’s kitchen has read a lot of my past posts, (so I guess that like button does work!), and told me recently she enjoyed them, and that means a lot. But it is the perfectionist in me, that makes me want to edit it until I get it just so. Then a year later when I re-read it, I can still see the mistakes in it. I’m just not a quick writer. Three times a week sounds okay, or even two, one on the weekend and one mid-week? PS. I spent most of my working life feeling like a hamster on a wheel! It’s nice not to feel so rushed now.

Someone told me (and in a snarky way I might add) that blog posts were supposed to be “short and snappy” and not long and drawn out. I did not comment on that but left it there. I am like you, if my posts are long, so be it … sometimes the subject matter warrants it, especially if you are doing something historical or a family story for instance like you or I do. I did the post last night and it was short, but it still took a lot of time as it had pictures in it. I try not to get frustrated about being behind in Reader and everything else in my life as well, but it happens and then sometimes I think about life before blogging, and I have my doubts about all the time put into it. I think twice a week is better to be honest … only if it’s short to do three. As I said, doing a long post each weekend day, all I accomplish is walking, dealing with the photos and getting them ready for the post, writing the post, then comments and trying to catch up in Reader. I tell myself I can indulge myself as I was always so diligent in keeping the house perfect (for my mom and outside work as well. By the time you factored in grocery shopping, laundry … I did not do cooking, my mom did, but we did dishes every night. I used to feel if I did a lot of stuff in the house on a weekend that on Monday I went back to work like I’d never been off. And I’ve always had bosses who were busy – when I worked on site I was really busy with Robb and brought home work sometimes (not paid for it). It caused consternation by my mom and we’d squabble over CONSIDERED part-time, PAID part-time but do not work just the four hours I am paid for. I start at 11:00 and usually gone by 5:30. I shut down 1/2 hour at 3:00 p.m. because my computer gets hot and so I shut down – at first when I did that I just said I was shutting down to cool the laptop. I return at 3:30. While shut down I usually eat so I can stay on here after work. But if I am working on some rush, I am expected to stay a little longer – resent it but have not said anything as I still get my check for medical insurance which is helpful since, although I have Obamacare, it does not include dental or optical and I still pay $1,300.00 a year for disability insurance. When you are at a company the price for your disability insurance premiums are either paid by the company/firm, or the premiums are dirt cheap. I think I should get off it sometimes, but then worry something will happen. My neighbor’s son switched jobs and his new job did not include disability insurance. He started this job the same time Robb/I started on our own. So Marge (my neighbor) told her son to get individual disability insurance just as my mom told me to. Keith got disability insurance and a few months later, he had a stroke – paralyzed from the waist down. Luckily it was in place already and he only had high blood pressure before – no other medical issues at that time he applied. My mom said “get disability insurance now!” I struggle every day knowing I am spending too much time on the computer – not healthy for eyes, arm or sitting all those hours. It is almost like an addiction. I am looking forward to being retired. I hope he stays in business the three years, then I can retire, though my financial guy who manages stocks (as I don’t have a clue about that) says to retire at 67 and take social security at that time, no sooner. Life is too short and it is sad we work our entire life, then finally retire and we are older and can’t enjoy ourselves. I am like you and am a perfectionist – want the post to be perfect and I still see mistakes. Little ones, but things I overlooked.

I was told by someone early days that post should be no longer than 500 words. My last one clocked in at 3000. But she does read them occasionally. Agree, that’s a personal preference, but maybe some people have shorter attention spans. I really miss my work benefits, we would have a small deduction taken off paycheck, $20 per month, and I had disability and travel insurance and a great dental plan with 90% coverage up to $2000 too. When I retired, I looked into buying drug/dental/eye coverage but it was $400 per month, crazy, considering I don’t take any medication and see the dentist twice a year and the eye doctor once. It looks like we might be having a national drug plan here in Canada eventually, they are talking about it, and I can get free drug coverage through the province when I turn 65. A stupid question, but do you have to pay for Obamacare, or does your workplace pay for that? I know that’s a hot topic in the US now. I would keep your disability, not to be negative but say you had to have shoulder surgery at some point. We can collect long term disability here through the Canada Pension Plan (where you have contributed through your workplace over the years), and then can collect CPP at age 65 unreduced, and also get OAS (old age pension then too). I have a stockbroker guy too, and see him once or twice a year to review, all that financial stuff does not interest me.

This blogger is from Quebec and used to be a professional proofreader and is very critical – it is her way. She has a boyfriend who just moved in with her from Sudbury and since then she continues to publish posts but reads no one else’s and has said she does not have time to read anymore. I have not unfollowed her yet but most everything she writes about is grammar, or stories about things like the Holocaust – she is Jewish. Anyway, she told me if I wanted to write long posts, to just write a book. Okay lady – don’t read it then.
We are so similar Joni – when Robb/I left the firm, he said he would give me the equivalent of what I had in health insurance there. His wife was a teacher and he was on her insurance for years since he was an of-counsel at the Firm and not a member or an employee. After we had the merger in 2001, he was forced to become a member in 2002, but still stayed on his wife’s insurance. He is older than me (just turned 72) so on Medicare for years now. So anyway, in February 2003, we left the Firm and he gave me the amount to stay on COBRA for the 18 months that is allowed then find a comparable health insurance. At that time, it was $450.00 a month but included health insurance only (optical, dental and medical). I saw an insurance broker whom I met with and he told me to go with Humana (supposedly a “richer plan for benefits” than Blue Cross which is the primo health insurer here). So, my insurance was about $400.00/month and did not include dental or optical. Like you, it is twice/year for the dentist and once/year for the eye doctor. He told me I had no issues with either, so pay it out-of-pocket. When I went to Humana it was around $400.00 so I had $50.00/month left over for dental/optical/disability – didn’t help much and Human raised my insurance shortly thereafter … when I was paying over $600.00/month for health insurance with no dental/optical I switched to Obamacare. Because I don’t work full-time and have a low income, I do pay for Obamacare, but it is mostly subsidized by the government. However, I saw an insurance broker and he advised getting the supplemental insurance, so that’s an additional $88.00 a month (for extra hospitalization care). I should have switched to Obamacare before – stupid of me not too. I told Robb when they raised it to $500.00 so he gave me $500.00 and that’s what I get now … but my dentist is nice, but expensive as it the eye doctor. I help pay for the big-screen TVs in each room at the dentists and for the continuing education that he takes his entire staff on once a year – just sayin’. Eye doctor bought the practice a few years ago – very young and don’t care for him but he is close by and does the eye test without the drops in the eyes – I got a bad reaction one time and had to get a neighbor to come and get my mom and I. They use a machine. But they are a ripoff and expensive. I think the disability insurance is high too to be honest, but I keep it. I know nothing about stock but made the investments a long time ago and he has said not to take dividends until 67 which I have listened to. It does not interest me one iota – I hate being like that, but I invested to be protected in old age and not interested how it works and do know that I’ve lost money from 2008 and the meltdown which does not make me happy.

Yes we are so similar. Well at least Obamacare is subsidized. I find dental care to be the biggest problem – I had a tooth repaired and a crown put on the year before I retired, when I still had the dental plan, and it was $1400 for one tooth, the next year he did two for $2200. I guess because they used a 3D printer, which was nice that they did it all in one day, but so expensive. They brought it into the room so I could watch the procedure. They also have a state of the art office, totally redecorated in the newest modern style. They charge $140 for a cleaning, that’s the discount rate, normal if $160. My old dentist had the same bordered 80’s wallpaper and picture of Paris on the wall for decades, and charged $96 for a cleaning. I have problems with that eye test too, can’t see for hours after if they use the dilation drops, and always have to get a taxi there and back. Lost money in 2008 too, but the good thing about the US stock market now is it’s booming, that’s why people vote for Trump! I meant to comment on your 6 hour day when you get paid for 4hours……I regret all those years I worked overtime at the hospital and did not get paid….all those stat holidays I worked when there was no one else, and I was non-union so did not get stat pay, live and learn, I would not be so dedicated again. We do that because we have work ethic, but I bet younger people don’t do that now.

I never claimed for overtime and you are right Joni – it is a work ethic and once you start somewhere with that ethic, there is no turning back. I always got to work early when I worked downtown as I took the bus. We had to go over a bridge and often during “freighter season” (April to November), if a freighter was coming along, the bridge went up, sometimes earlier than needed, but the bridge could be up for as long as 30-40 minutes. Plus, you never knew if a bus was late or would not come. So if no boat and the bus was timely, I’d get to work really early. I should have just gone somewhere downtown, and sometimes did an errand, but I often just went into work. Dumb. Now, my feeling is this: Yes I am paid for 4 hours and work 6, but my commute after Robb/I moved out on our own involved two buses … I rarely drove. So, it took me, if good connections 45 minutes to get to work. 45 minutes home. This does not count being out in the crummy weather, walking to the bus, etc. – so to me that extra two hours that I sit here on my butt typing is a lot easier than the commute. That is how I reconcile it in my mind anyway. As to the dentist, same with me … I really liked my dentist and he retired and a new dentist came in. Liked him a lot and had the same hygienist for years (knew her brother from high school) and the dentist’s wife was the receptionist. All great people, then Dr. Dorsey had a neurological problem and could no longer work and sold the practice and went into teaching at the dental school. Did not like the new dentist. My dentist now is nice, but I have an issue with overcharging, even if he gives me a 10% discount. The eye doctor wanting to foist his financial analyst’s business card on me every time is an annoyance. The biggest annoyance is that they eliminated the optical department when this eye doc bought the practice. That means that essentially if you need a stronger prescription, you have to buy new frames as they will not have you buy new lenses only and they fit them into the frame when they come in from the factory. So you have to buy the whole new glasses and that just grinds me – a ripoff in my opinion. I no longer wear contact lenses, but when I did they were the Boston Gas Permeable rigid lenses. I used to have two pair and rotate them. The first pair was $75.00 and the second pair was $25.00 if I got them when I had my yearly eye doctor appointment. Also, there was a discount for glasses if you got them at the same time of the appointment. This guy does nothing like that and I end up with glasses that are $700.00 (with a 10% discount there) and no designer frames, but I do have trifocals and progressive lenses so there is no line and very thin lenses … but still. My crown was about that as well and I had one while I had dental insurance and one after – ridiculous for the price and he did not have the printer – that is very interesting that they can do on the spot. Wow! My cleaning is about the same – once a year the dentist does a “free peek” – the other time he charges for an abbreviated visit.

That is a good way to look at it, being home safe and sound vs a two hour commute! $700 for glasses! My mother paid that once at the ophthalmologist office, before we realized they were ripping people off, (the designer frames alone were $275 which she didn’t realize) the next pair she got was at a local store for $400 which was still enough. That 3D printer for the tooth is state of the art. They took a bunch of dental images and relayed them to a computer screen, then put a piece of porcelain or whatever the material is, in the 3D printer, a small box like device, where it was continuously bathed in streams of water, and it shaped it in about 20 minutes, to the exact same specifications as your regular tooth. It was very nosy listening to it. They have a 3D printer at the library for the kids to make plastic things out of, and I find the sound of it annoying too. My new dentist is retiring, and brought his two sons and DIL into the practice with him, so three are now doing the work of one.

The eye doctor is expensive and we switched to him when our eye doctor decided to retire due to health reasons (about 6 months after our dentist did the same thing). He closed down the entire practice – there were other eye doctors there, plus the optical department, plus a contact lens guy that I saw and I went to him four times a year to have my contacts polished to keep them clear as I didn’t blink enough. I was seeing an opthalmologist and we asked for a referral and was given this place. My mom and I never thought to ask if it was an opthalmologist – he is an optometrist only. My mom had borderline glaucoma and had to go twice a year at the old place for a Humphrey Fields test and was on drops for eye pressure. When we came here, we had paid for our medical records to take with us to the new eye doctor and he said nothing to my mom about continuing those tests. Those were two brothers and they retired about four years ago and the new guy came in. I don’t like that they don’t have an optical department to fit your new lenses in – all they do is order and adjust them to your face. That alone is a ripoff in my opinion. The crown idea is just great!

I’m happy my mom goes to London to the Ivey Institute now for her glaucoma, they are the experts in the area. Our regular optometrist does those visual field tests, but most optometrists don’t, as they don’t want to pay for the equipment and staff to run it. But he is close to retirement age too! It’s hard having to start over with all these new people!

We went to this eye doctor as we were recommended, as I mentioned before, but also because at that time they had an eye doctor who specialized in geriatric eye problems. That is why we were recommended the Lesnick office plus the same doctor specialized in contact lenses. He was only in the local office on Tuesdays. When the original owners retired (at the same time), the new guy is not associated with that doctor. He wanted everything for himself and eliminated him and the optical lab. My hairdresser’s husband (they co-own the salon) wears contacts and she told me the contacts for him for throw-away lenses do not equal what I paid for my eyeglasses and last year I got sunglasses on top of it. I was driving more and more on weekends and the clip-on glasses would not stay on my glasses and I bought a pair of oversized, wraparound sunglasses and had no peripheral vision, so I got the sunglasses, but if I need a stronger prescription, I have to either go without wearing them for two weeks or order an entirely new pair. Don’t like that at all. But Jill encouraged me to go back to contact lenses – actually so did the eye doctor. I said “why- I work from home and I’m not vain like I once was.” If you ever change eye doctors, see if you can get one that does the Optomap – that is the retinal exam without the dilation drops – I mentioned that to you yesterday. I got a bad reaction one time – had to spend the entire day at the eye doctor with my mom (she had a regular eye doc visit too) and get a neighbor to come (husband and wife) so one could drive themselves back and one could drive my car back and park it in the garage. They did reversal drops and it did not work.

I will ask. I only go to my ophthalmologist every 2 years, not due till March 2020, and only to be screened for glaucoma, as my mom has it. He just opened a new office with all the latest machines, so he must have that one too! I hate having to get a driver. Going to attempt the dreaded Block editor again tonight.

My mom had low-angle glaucoma and was on the drops 2X a day for years. Hopefully he has gotten it since you were last there. What I like is that they take the picture with this machine of both eyes and then it goes into a data base and when having the optical exam, the doctor pulls up the pictures on the screen. He enlarges the image to full screen and can see any broken blood vessels, blockages in your arteries in eye from plaque. Then he does a comparison to years past to see if there are changes. And no blurriness at all. Here is the link below. I think mine is $65.00 for the exam. Good luck with the dreaded Block editor – don’t forget to set the publish date way ahead and just play with it a bit – go up to the top left-hand-side and click the plus sign and you have your options right there:

Well Linda….I did it….posted my first block post. It wasn’t as bad as I expected as I had watched a short 15min tutorial by someone on youtube. Of course, there are many more things I need to learn, and features I used to use but now don’t know how. I had a hard time getting the links in to past posts and it worked, but I’m not sure how I did it. And the yellow colour was disappointing…..some ugly amber color, not worth getting excited about.

Oh, that’s great Joni – I’ll go look at your actual site. I had a difficult time putting an old link in also and had to abandon it because I usually always test the link first in preview and because I didn’t see where you type the words to go with url, I just embedded it – it got messed up, so I left it out. It was the post about bugs and one of the women I follow likes spiders and centipedes. She is a retired science teacher and just had written a post about how if she finds a centipede or spider in the shower, she is careful not to get it wet … me, I’d have a heart attack. I killed such a big centipede in the kitchen this morning. It was walking on the kitchen floor and I had good “stomping shoes” on and killed it – I let out a scream … 5:30 in the morning. I will go look. I did a post today and after I posted it, I remembered I wanted to try doing a side-by-side (image and text) … it was a long post so took me a while and had pics too. Will try it next time. After you do it a few times it will be easier and not so cumbersome. I think it is time-consuming.

The link for me was just trial and error – I don’t actually know what I did that worked, as there was an apply button, and then another one below. I wonder how to do side by side pictures, as I sometimes will do that. I switched back to Classic tonight as I wrote up a draft on A Victorian Tea and wanted to make sure it was on here as well, as it will need a lot of pictures, and I don’t have time to play with it right now. I’m beat – pruned 22 rose bushes today, lots of dead wood in them, but half okay. Too much fresh air – should sleep well tonight – not staying up late reading books!

Good that they have all come back at least … I have to look at mine again, it was too soggy out there still from all the rain, so will look tomorrow. The link did work to your last post (Enchanted April). There are several tutorials at YouTube on how to do the side-by-side. I intended to do it and never thought about it as it was getting later. You had lots of fresh air and will sleep good for sure!

So I decided to go to your actual site to see it since Reader doesn’t show all the extra touches and clicked on your name … I get to your site and it asks if I want to “follow” you. That happened to a fellow blogger when she went to see how Gutenberg looked and she has been following for awhile. Strange.

Oh Linda…..I tried the Block Editor tonight, what a disaster. Couldn’t even paste my draft into it? I thought it was supposed to automatically put it into blocks, but it wouldn’t even allow me to paste anything. I then spent an hour trying to find the button to take my back the the Classic Editor, finally way down at the bottom of some drop down menu. Emailed a HA. So not impressed.

Don’t forget if you do a draft to schedule it for in the future Joni. I do that since I don’t like that the “preview” and “post” button are right next to one another and I am constantly saving it on top of it. Yes, the toggle button to return to Classic is at the bottom. I have a difficult time finding “tags” … one time it is easy to find, the next time, I am pushing buttons to find it. Before you pasted the text from your Word document into the new draft post, did you first click at the very top to begin a new paragraph – up at the top there are the options – the only ones I’ve tried are the new paragraph, new heading and new image. If you click that, then go and paste your text in and Gutenberg automatically will divvy your paragraphs, just as you had them in Word. I am having to upload images because I don’t do well with the drag and drop. I used drag and drop when I did the gallery on the front page of my blog – I have my favorite 50 park pictures there and can move them around okay, but drag-and-drop doesn’t work for me. I have tried uploading pictures from the media library as well as from my computer and both seem to work about the same. I am no expert by any means and don’t forget I’ve been doing it now since the first post on April 14th, so almost three weeks. The first post I did that day took me forever and I think there was just one picture and I boldfaced some things, but I drafted it right on WordPress and I never do that. I like drafting in Word and I put asterisks where I will insert the picture(s) right in my draft.

What is a “tag”? I am thinking I might be better to watch a youtube video so I don’t get myself into a panic state like I did last night. I did finally chat with a Happiness Engineer, who told me I needed to paste over the cursor? so maybe I didn’t have it in the right place. Did I even see a cursor? I typed a heading, but maybe it was just a heading for the paragraph. He said it should block it automatically. He also told me drafting in Office and pasting into the Classic Editor can cause problems with code??? I said I do it all the time! And I’m sure many people do. These guys all think in code. I think I might wait until another night to attempt it again, it’s 10:30 and my grasscutter/gardener guy texted me he’s planning on coming tomorrow, as the lawn is like a meadow. Hopefully it won’t rain again. I just upload my pictures, I don’t even know what drop and drag is? Don’t stay up too late!

When I contacted the Happiness Engineers to ask why the font was suddenly smaller on my blog, he said it was not and asked why I said that. I said as soon as I cut-and-pasted it from Word (I’m still using Windows 7 – I know Office is part of Windows 10 … something else to learn – grrr) that it was a paler font. He said “why not draft it there in WP?” He seemed incredulous and I said that I also blogged at a hyperlocal paper and if I was to cut-and-paste from the blog post to Word, it has little marks in it (those circles or funny arrows if you take something from a website sometimes). He said “well there’s your problem!” I said (just like you) … I’ve been pasting from Word since Day #1. And, you said the other night that you noticed the Gutenberg enhancements and the larger font – I made the font look bigger by adjusting the typeface – it was so light and small you couldn’t see it and it looked boring – the same reason you do your blog posts in boldface. We know what we like. I select the block and then go and get my text from Word – in fact sometimes I put an “x” so I know where to put it, so I know it is inside the block. I thought you did tags – I never tagged anything until the 5th anniversary of my blog and then I started putting tags like “walk, walking, nature, squirrels” … I have not categorized anything – it is too late to start that … I was positive you did that already … I have a bunch of windows open as I am in another browser in Reader and this browser in Comments. That’s so I don’t lose my place. I am going to read Shelley’s post and one other woman since they both comment on mine, then head to bed. I hope it doesn’t rain for you – I heard not til Thursday afternoon. Will cross my fingers for you. I don’t use drag-and-drop at all.

Yes of course I do use tags, I was just having a seniors moment. I guess that will be something else to have to hunt for in a different place. Maybe I didn’t select a block, so that’s why it didn’t paste? If there will be any advantage for me with the new editor it might be the font. I didn’t attempt it tonight, got caught up on REader instead, and might catch a few pages of a new murder mystery book….that is why I don’t go to bed when I should, I stay up and read!

At least you read Joni – I loved to read in my “former life” …. I thought you used tags … I will reply to your messages separately but saw the preview of your message that you did tags. I thought you did. And I don’t know why I didn’t look at the bottom of your posts – mine are at the bottom, but some themes the tags are at the top. Yes, it dawned on me that you were not selecting the block from the top left-hand corner first, where you pick from options … images, headings and paragraphs/text … there are other options there, I just use those three.
I sometime select a paragraph box, then put a little “x” just so I can bring my text over and know right where to put it, unless I’ve already selected it and just paste it. While you are iu that block and if you want to add an image, go back to the top and select either image, heading next. We have a foggy morning right now, rain is imminent, storms are this afternoon/early and now it is raining Saturday morning … originally supposed to be a dry weekend. We are expected to have more flooding after today. The weather is terrible and you and I know it is not going to change. Better get going … have to check my blog post comments still, running late as I went to bed late and got up later. This has to stop quite honestly … I feel like I am flying by the seat of my pants. I have to do all the accounting stuff today and didn’t want to be sleepy.

I honestly don’t know where I was, in a block, and don’t even remember seeing any options as I didn’t get that far. I will keep that in mind. Just finished doing 4 hours of yard work, grass cut, patio furniture put out, although it needs a good wash, some plants cleaned up and trimmed, got 15 bags of dirt and 3 of mulch, all in all a productive day. The yard is still really soggy, squishy under foot, I was surprised he could cut the grass. Now one day for the rosebushes and hosing everything off and one day for cleaning out the garage. It started out cool then nice. I hope you don’t get too much more rain.

Good the rain held off for the grass-cutting at least because with all the rain we’ve had and on the horizon (I suspect you’re the same as us pretty much), then you have to worry about mosquitoes. You were very productive. I have to look at the rosebushes – I looked once last week but I didn’t see anything and have not looked again, and can see the one lilac from the side door and no leaves or blooms yet on it. Our rain is to start this evening and continue overnight and thunderstorms. I am going to try and catch up here and shut down the pull the plug on the laptop due to the storms. I took my car for a little spin this morning (so that cut into the walking time), but when they said it may rain Saturday morning and tomorrow morning and through the day, I thought I’d better drive it a little. Thought I’d go to the Park with peanuts to feed my pals, and got near the Park and there was flooding on the road and it was blocked off. So drove a bit and put the car in the garage and walked in the neighborhood. The two parks I planned to go to have water over the seawalls spilling onto the boardwalks so not going there this weekend. Likely just going to Council Point Park only and getting some stuff done in the house – we have a rainy week next week too beginning Monday!

Same with us – now no rain on Saturday morning so that’s great for a change, but Monday rain and an all-day rain on Tuesday – those poor people with flooding issues. But all the parks where I go are all flooded. I just saw a pic of Heritage Park which was going to have their annual clean-up day tomorrow and it was cancelled and they showed the flooding. I had thought of going there although I was there in March and everywhere that there was pooled water was frozen and I took pics of the path, and left. The four parks on the water are flooded with water over the seawall so boardwalks are flooded. So I will stick close to home tomorrow and probably Sunday as well.

PS. I don’t think we could have had as much rain as you did, as no flooding here, although I have water in the back of the yard in the low spots and the grass was very squishy in parts. Water spilling over the seawalks does not sound good. Is this because the Detroit river water levels are high?

I think alot of the problem not only stemmed from the fact that we got 3 1/2 inches of water in 7 hours’ time, but the rivers and streams had a lot of ice buildup after the Polar Vortex. We have highways still flooded – the pumps cannot get rid of the water quickly enough. We had 9 straight days of rain – that is crazy! I wouldn’t try any new parks either, especially after law week. With rain all next week, I have a 5K next Saturday at that park where there was all the flooding … I hope they don’t have the route along that path.

You are right – I just looked at your last few posts and you don’t tag … I wanted to be clear we both meant the same thing. I never tagged til February 2018 as I didn’t know what it meant. But when you tag, you just go to the right-hand-side under where you have the publish part and there is an area for tagging. For me, since I tag “walk, walking and nature” so much, I start writing the word and it auto-completes, then I put a comma and go to the next category. So the algorithms in WordPress will send samples of my walking post to others who might follow or write in that genre. I don’t categorize into topics – I guess I should have started at day one and it would take a while to go through and all I could categorize would be nature, walking, family, holidays to start. Go to the end of my last post and scroll to the end past the little bio page and you will see how it shows the tags and not categorized: https://lindaschaubblog.net/2019/04/30/only-1000-more-miles-to-reach-my-goal/

I wouldn’t go back and do the past ones, but you could start doing them now. I’m not sure it would make much difference anyway, as if many of your categories are the same, ie walking, nature, etc, how would it sort which ones link to show up? I mean your posts are always wonderfully creative and different, and it amazes me how you do that. So maybe just categorize those ones which have a more specific topic. I’m trying to think what my topics are, books, history, genealogy, spring, decorating etc that kind of thing. I’m not sure that categories help people find your topics, it just organizes them, so if they read one topic on say a book review, others may up below, but I don’t even know if that consistently happens. I will have to check. Yes I just checked under my last Literary Salon post, and it brought up two others below it, but above the comments section, but only in the Reader. I will try it with the daffodil blog if I ever get it done, and see if it links to last years blog.

You’re right Joni. I don’t have that many times I stray off topic (although all the rain and no walks had me doing the bugs, the robins and the gray days). Unbelievably, I never did any tags until the 5th anniversary of the blog. I think just setting it up was an ordeal enough and then I only had a handful of subscribers – actually 18 I think, but only two commented regularly. I say my neighbor Marge commented since day #1, but often I notice when I go to send an old blog post link, that there was no comment from Marge. She was in the hospital at least 6-8 times a year, but usually accessed the posts on her phone and she just had me send it to her at Facebook every time I published a new one. He says Google readers (non WP people) can’t like posts, which I understand is true, but I don’t see that many google referrers when I check my stats, so it still seems strange, however he tells me I’m doing fine for the number of views I do have. We also chatted about the new Block Editor and he gave me a link to a test site and a tutorial – if you want I can pass it along, but maybe you are already knowledgeable about it. Well that is good that you are doing well in the stats and views. I didn’t know that a Google viewer could not “like” posts. Now would this Google viewer be someone who is Googling for book reviews, or for example “Ireland” or “Dutch heritage”? I will take the link if you have time Joni – I appreciate it. I wonder why I could comment on the old post? I had trouble with my bugs post last night. I could not embed a link to a fellow blogger’s post … it would not do it, and so I had to have it in the text. I justify the text even though it doesn’t show up like that in Reader. The posts done in Gutenberg look different on the actual blog site, than they do in Reader. They don’t have the color blocks, nor the color text and they don’t have justified text either. Anyway, I don’t know if you follow Laurie (Meditations in Motion) but she likes bugs (former science teacher before retiring) and she just wrote a post about how she will rescue spiders/centipedes in the house. So I tried twice to put the post in, and each time it was a broken link message, so I removed it from the post. It takes twice as long to use Gutenberg as it does to do a regular post, especially if you have lots of pictures. That’s my opinion, but when I had lots of pictures before it was easier for me to load up about ten at a time and move them around in the draft to match the asterisks that I put for each photo and where it went. I didn’t like the wind either – we had 40 mph winds earlier in the day. I don’t like erratic weather. I really don’t like severe storms in the Summer – we had a Derecho (flat line winds) that took out the power for a week and did a lot of damage (not to this house) in the area. Ever since then, high winds and tornadic conditions worry me. I am a weather worrier to begin with. 🙂

That was only the Happiness Engineers opinion that he thought I was doing well – they are probably trained as cheerleaders. I just like to know how things work, or thought I had something set wrong. I dread trying out the new editor, but he told me to sooner rather than later. I have nothing ready for this week, so will link back to a daffodil post, and give it a try before Thursday. Lately I’ve been posting on Thursdays. I may try it on the test site first. I’ll send you the link later tonight, have to find it on my email list. He said he would email a summary of the chat. As you have already tried it out a bit, maybe the tutorial will give you some answers to any questions you might have. My fear is that everything will take much longer. I just finished making Date Nut Loaf and my kitchen smells wonderful. I would send some to you (and Parker & Co might like it too as it contains walnuts), if I could. It has started raining and snow will arrive around midnight they say. It does take longer, but eventually you will get used to it. I just got tripped up last night. When you do a paragraph it is a block, a headline is a block, an image is a block. But if you draft in Word and cut-and-paste over say 5 paragraphs, Gutenberg will automatically make five different blocks – you don’t have to do that yourself. (That’s good.) I would like to be there smelling the Date Nut loaf and having a piece with you – I am sure Parker would love a piece too!

Thanks Joni – I appreciation it. I can stand to learn more – I was trying to learn one new thing a day on it and stopped doing that but have consistently used it now for two solid weeks. Today’s post took forever to do in Gutenberg because it had so many pictures.
I could have taken one hour less and just loaded the pictures in Classic Editor and moved them around to fit the text, but I persevered, but now I am behind in comments and likely won’t get to Reader and start the week off behind already. I noticed some subtle changes to Gutenberg, like tonight when I did this post, the preview was in a different window and it did this hop, step and a dance and said “generating preview” and it never did that before.

I agree – and I think they should take a poll on whether we want to stick with Classic Editor. I would go back in a heartbeat. I am still mad they took away the orange-colored stars in Reader. It is hard to tell where you left off.

Yes, sometimes in Reader I unclick as I’m not sure if I’ve clicked or not … I usually click like when I beginbut if it is a long post I’ll unclick as I don’t want to appear that I “liked” only and didn’t comment (always the polite blogger :).) I have two more links to share: the first is a story about the photographer that photographed Zena and Munch. Interesting: https://www.stevenhillphotography.com/blog/2018/7/24/working-with-the-secret-blind

The second is how the color block and color text works: see these blog posts at the very end, where I used gray block and blue text. Also, the justified margin does not show up in Reader either. Lastly, Kate Crimmons a fellow blogger (not sure if you follow her or not – she is part of a group of people I follow, anyway she told me Friday she did not get my blog about bugs in her Reader, but got an e-mail for it. She subscribes to both e-mail/Reader for all the people she follows. She said it happened with others.
I did not get comments on my bug post from some who always comment. There is a spider in my rtoom – I suspect the same one.
I am watching over my soulder. Here are the two examples of color block/text and you can see the justified as well – I like the look of justified and not ragged margins and use justified at work, always have:

Yes I see the difference now, and it looks nice, but is it worth all the work of the New Editor for some small layout changes?. Not in my opinion, but I have yet to give it a sincere try – maybe tomorrow night.

I agree with you Joni – I wanted you to see what I meant by the color block and colored text. I tried the “dropped cap” and it looked nice, but changed the wording in my paragraph, as in put in its own words (remember Shelley had that happen one time?) Also, you can underline and enlarge sub-headlines and it does not show up in Reader – neither does the justification show up. No one is looking at it here, except me! Unless subscribers get things in color and the fancy stuff. I have to say it took me a long time on Sunday night, but tonight it did not. I did most of the post on Saturday and collected the photos, and just did the first part of the post tonight. I did manage to put it together, from start to finish in about 35 minutes – so maybe I’m getting used to it now. I still prefer the old editor though. I’m a creature of habit.

sorry that overview one should be http://www.wordpress.org/gutenberg He told me I could test it out there, but all it allowed me to do was a heading and a paragraph, no media. I was not impressed. The tutorial link was more useful. I get the general idea of it, but I have an old theme with a sidebar menu of my posts etc which they say will not work. It seems way too advanced for your average blogger. I wish they would allow us the option of keeping the old one. People with professional sites will probably be happy with the new one, but is that most of their business? When I started WP a year and a half ago they had 32million blogs, now it’s 52 million. I think anyone with a business hires a professional to maintain their blog, what about us amateurs or hobby bloggers? It just seems like it’s going to be more work than it’s worth. Maybe I’m just discouraged tonight, but I feel like I’ve hit the 18 months blogger wall, and not sure I want to continue to put so much work into it anyway.

Thanks Joni – I put this with the other info. I must be honest and say that I find that the Gutenberg editor is taking way too long – the thing that gets me is that no one is seeing the enhancements. If you go directly to my site, you will see the enhancements when I did the color block and color text, but no one is looking at my site, except my subscribers and that is only Ann Marie that comments and another blogger, the one I mentioned who does trail walks and is now writing a blog of her own (on Blogr) – the other subscribers (my friends from high school – my current two friends I e-mail with are not interested at all – I’ve sent one, Ilene, the friend with the brain issue, the link when I began and did some nature posts and she said she was busy and would read it sometime which irked me and the other one has never asked me for the link, we got our DSLR cameras around the same time – I’ve sent a few links to blog posts when I used that camera, but she never comments on the post, so if I sent pics I will preface it by saying “you don’t have to read the narrative, just look at the pics” … sarcasm becomes me sometimes because I feel that it is just as big a part of my life as Ilene’s dogs, or Evelyn’s grad school degree and I listen patiently to those trials and tribulations … but I digress). And I worry that they will mess up my theme – I have a very easy theme and it is no longer available as I looked and I think something comparable is the 2015 theme (I have 2010 theme) … I don’t want something that is difficult to find the blog post that I just did or recent ones. I am spending much more time on here than I ever did and I also think to myself “is all this worth it?” It is a good resume if you were looking to get into a creative writing field, but at this time I hope my boss stays in business the next three years as he talks about (hopefully, since he just got all this new equipment and about to buy a refurbished copier as well as ours is 16 years old). I’m not looking to find another job unless this one fizzles and dies, then I’d consider an online job … my days of going out to work like before won’t happen … too old to start that up again. But it would be a good “portfolio” should you/I ever need it.

I checked out your site and did not notice any colour blocking or difference, other than the font looks a bit bigger? I don’t even have any email subscribers, nope not a single one, unless you include those phantom googlers the Happiness Engineer mentioned! You have a sidebar like I do, and I read somewhere it won’t translate as well width wise which makes sense. I think about the Is it worth it question, because blogging is supposed to be fun, and this new editor is going to take the fun out of it. I googled, and saw a survey, out of 2700 testers, 1800 hated it. What elusive market of coders/advanced users are they doing this for? When you write your children’s books, (after your boss retires which does not sound likely for awhile since he bought all the new equipment), you can use the blog as a portfolio to show your very excellent writing skills. As for me, I think I would be better putting my time into the abandoned murder mystery….

I saw this message first and sent you a sample with color blocking in a separate comment. I don’t see the point in spending an extra hour like I did lat night to use the new editor when no one sees it. I used to subscribe to myself so I could see how the post looked to e-mail subscribers but stopped when bloggingh took off because every comment went to my e-mail as well. I hope they don’t force me into using a new theme – it took a long time to do this initially and I don’t have time (nor patience) to redesign it.
I chose the simplest theme (2010 theme) and I think I said yesterday it was no longer available- a comparable theme now is “2015 theme”. Don’t give up just yet, you plunked out $99.00 to renew – it’s one thing if you were doing it on the free WP, but you have money in it. Sadly, too much time and effort plus money is put into my blog … got the new camera last year (the DSLR) to enhance the blog and return to photography, a hobby I enjoyed in the late 70s/early 80s but I rarely use it … should have used it yesterday. I think you can do both the mystery and the blogging, maybe more in Winter when the weather is bad – now get out and walk (when it doesn’t rain).

I wouldn’t abandon ship yet, but if they force it in early 2020, which is what I heart somewhere, and I’m not liking it I may not renew? I think the blog is good writing practice, but I enjoy the writing part, not all that design stuff. And I do remember how hard it was to setup at the beginning, if not for the help of the library summer student who had her own WP blog, I doubt I would have persisted. I am far better if someone shows me and I do it once or twice myself, then it sticks in my head. All that experimenting with icons and symbols is for the birds!

Yes, and when you try it, set the draft to launch at a time in the future so you can practice and don’t worry about hitting publish by accident. Preview and publish are side-by-side (not good in my opinion). I just finished this post here and went to Patch.com to post there as I always do. I had a ton of pictures and I could upload the header photo but tried to upload the photos for today’s post and their software kept putting in old pictures from the post of the flowers in the neighborhood. Hmm. Do a simple post – you were going to do Daffodils and do the link back … my first post was easiest and today’s was the longest with the most photos to date.

Your welcome! I wish I could have sent you the real thing. We had some tonight for desert after our Chinese food, as I find Chinese food always makes you hungry a few hours later, all those carbs. I gave my mom a couple of slices and will offer some to the Kitchen Design lady tomorrow, as she will probably be here for several hours taking all her measurements and asking me what I want in minute detail etc. I had to wrap up the second Home Depo session early (the first one at Lowe’s went almost 3 hours), as my mom said she was hungry. I find sometimes if you offer a bit of food/dessert to these reno people, you sometimes get a better quote! At least, it has worked for me in the past. Salted carmel cappuccino sounds too sweet for me, but I prefer chocolate over carmel. But see you had some nuts too in the hazelnut creamer. I wonder if Parker would like that? I find I have gained a few pounds this past month as I haven’t been very active, not good as all my clothes are basically the same size. I did walk today but it was such a cold wind that I cut it short.

My mom used to do that as well and I do think they appreciate it and if not a lower price, certainly better service. I decided not to get that “treat coffee” now except at Christmas, otherwise there will be nothing to look forward to then and it is very sweet. The little creamers are the same as the International Delight you buy refrigerated. I don’t like the refrigerated as it cools your coffee down too quickly.
I saw they had Reese Cup creamer when I got the hazelnut yesterday (chocolate and peanut butter) … sounds good. It was very windy when I was walking and wished I had a hat.

No, I don’t think she was a people person. I think she just didn’t care whether I hired them or not. It’s a family run business, they’ve been in business 50 years but I had heard they had gone downhill since the dad retired and his kids took over. I checked the online reviews and that was a common comment, unhelpful design team another one. I noticed that in the showroom, basically got ignored when there were 4 or 5 people chatting among themselves. Then a friend told me her DIL had issues with the company, they were not helpful and the countertop was not level, so already some red flags, but they did have the closest to what I want. I did go to another place today, and saw something I liked, and had a very nice and helpful sale lady. I think now I’m getting too much choice, but will wait until the quotes roll in, that should narrow it down!

I have noted this one … I will look at all of them, likely Tuesday as tomorrow night I will be catching up in Reader. One of my followers (and I follow her as well) is a woman in Wales. She is blind and writes posts about her adventures with her seeing eye dog, Munch, who is a Labradoodle. He is kind of on the “wild side” or maybe mischievous is a better word. Zena has a book coming out this Fall and it is available on Amazon now. It recounts how she has independence since getting Munch and their adventures together. She has a very tiny bit of sight, not much and she writes and reads her post on something called “Narrator” (I wonder if it is like that Dragon software we can get that you speak and words go on the page). She is very nice. Anyway, she just caught up with reading about 8 of my posts and commented on them plus commented back on my comment on her post. So, I may not get to Reader tonight. I feel badly when that happens and I am trying not to stay up til midnight to catch up as I’ve done in the past.

I see she wroter a post today, but I have to do Reader tomorrow as it is too late and we’re having thunderstorms tomorrow night and they say rain every day … I despair with this weather. Good thing I went grocery shopping yesterday. Zena says she is training Munch to make his “pawtograph” for the book tour. She has surgery on a knee coming up, so they had to delay the book.

My hairdresser has a Labradoodle but it is a golden one. A nice gentle breed for kids, and I like him because he doesn’t drool. I’m always the person that dogs head for and drool over my pants or worse! I followed her. And I learned something while looking at the Amazon link for her book. I never new Marfan’s syndrome could involve the connective tissue of the eyes! I always thought it was just cardiac, aorta and long limbs. She certainly has an interesting background and I would be interested in reading her book.

I had never heard of Marfan’s syndrome before – Zena sure does have a full plate of medical issues and has this problem with her knee as well, but that is fixable at least. I can’t remember the problem exactly, but it slipped out of the joint if I recall correctly. I like the stories about her and Munch especially. I didn’t read yesterdays post yet. I am going to try and get to Reader after I catch up in comments, but try to get to bed earlier. I am getting old and cannot stay up that late and expect to bounce out of bed at 5:00, earlier in Summer once it is lighter earlier and I try to get 5 miles daily in – we’re not there yet. And it was 40 degrees this morning with a real feel below freezing. Zena likes nature and her mother does as well, so when I do squirrel posts or other nature posts, she prints them off and gives them to her mom. Her mom caters to sparrows and I think she told me recently there are abut 200 or 250 go to her mom’s yard every day to get birdseed. That’s pretty impressive. I saw a cute Labradoodle at Council Point Park yesterday – it was a golden retreiver/poodle mix and had the golden color. The woman said it was still a puppy and it was very cute.

I don’t know about doing that. I can’t get up as early as I used to – I was getting up very early while working, and while walking in the Summer (I like the cool morning air, not the heat and humidity). Thanks – that has the complete link, saved that one and will discard the others … I am at my old laptop as I was loading pics onto it and just stayed here, so e-mailed it to myself. My laptops are not linked together in case I would ever get a virus. First, the arm pain – I think it is getting better – I will have not tried the vertical mouse – had it a month, but my “mouse arm” is not my sore arm, and I had an epiphany last night and you are the first one I’m sharing this with.
This morning I Googled around and this is very real and there is a solution for it. All along I’ve said it was ergonomics and not that I hurt myself. I’ve lifted the primary laptop higher, I bought a wireless keyboard and the new mouse (not used as mentioned above), but my arm is not as painful but I have no range of motion. So, just in the last week or so I was able to sleep on my left side, though it doesn’t last the night – I only ever slept on my left side my entire life. So anyway, at the beginning of the Winter, I could barely pick the blanket up with my left arm to cover up and then the blanket was heavy and hurt my arm. I bought a small pillow (travel pillow) like they recommended and it helped a little to elevate my arm, but the blanket was heavy. I’d pull my arm out many times. Last night I woke up in the middle of the night three times… now I have this fear that the little ants will get into bed and I put kleenex in my ears – call it a wild imagination but I picture ants going into my ears. So the kleenex fell out and I had a fresh kleenex box nearby, got a new kleenex and put it in my ear. So each time I woke up, my left arm is is in the same position as it is all day, it is crooked and like that while I type or while I am even surfing the internet, and only using my “mouse hand” and not typing. I was driving today and went about 30 miles, glanced down at my arm, and once again it is resting against my body in th same position. My arm is never moving and each time I woke up, my arm is not stretched out, so the only time my arm is not in that position is when I’m walking or eating. That’s not good! Looked online and found a couple of splints and will look at them in detail tomorrow. I searched online, then on Amazon which has several types (one looks like the splint my mom had for her carpal tunnel syndrome which she used before the surgery, but had to have surgery anyway) and the other is a band around the elbow – still another one is a cardboard splint … the problem is some must be put on by someone else, you can’t do it yourself.
The idea is to keep your arm stretched out.
And other people Googled this and other people got this aid to keep their arm stretched and not folded while sleepiung.
I can’t type with my arm stretched out in front of me, but I sure can do it while sleeping, but not on my own. Why did it never dawn on me before this? When I was driving today, I kept watching myself and my left arm starts to gravitate toward my body and in the same position as all day long when typing. I am determined to tackle this issue and without PT … I saw my mom go through physical therapy and we did the same exercises at home and it did not help. I’ll exercise my arm on its own and try this device. Just gave it a cursory look and one person said the Velcro straps were cheap so that made me think I could contact a medical supply company we have nearby and ask their recommendation for a better one and if they could measure me – I can’t measure for it either. There was a suggestion to try and we have ace bandages here at the house from my mom, so will look and try that first. They say:

Keeping the elbow straight while sleeping minimizes tension on and irritation of the ulnar nerve. A homemade splint can be made with a towel loosely wrapped around the elbow and held in place with an ace bandage or tape. I kind of like this one best because people also say the Velcro loosens and it tends to slide around … if this is all I needed to do, I will kick myself.

As far as the computer – Ron, the computer guy has not contacted me about bringing the laptop to the house. He installed the new server on the 13th of April and the server and laptops were ordered the same day. At the time for Phase I (server/laptops) I asked him to send the new laptop directloy from the factory to my house and I would configure it and asked for a large screen HP as I’ve had no issues with HP ever. He says how about a Dell and I will configure it and bring it to you? (No, not to be an ingrate, I don’t like how he configured the work computers and I had to redo everything the way it was before). I have not heard from Ron, but my boss contacted him last week and asked when we get th enew work stations and accounting software (I am irked about this … he does not have the accounting software to master and it does import the old data in, we have to start from scratch so lots of work for me). So what is the rush. But my boss paid the money for Phase II … when Ron gets on the stick I have no idea, but I really didn’t want him here, wanted to do it myself. (Even though I anticipate that the interface is different for Windows 10 and maybe I will encounter issues setting it up.)

That is strange about your arm but worth checking into. We have Shoppers Home Health here, which carries splints and home health aides, and their staff are trained in how to measure and what kind of splint you need. Do you have any kind of home health supply places around, My mom went to a different one for supplies for her hip surgery, that had physio staff too. Pharmacies here have some splints but just the cheap store brands, none worth recommending. I had a Dell for my first laptop, poor support, but that was back in 2000. You are brave to do all that configuring yourself. Wouldn’t there be a way to add in the old accounting data? Is this Ron guy of any help if you do run into issues, or will you have to deal with someone else?

I just took some time after leaving work to check them out – the concept is good of trying to keep that arm flat instead of constantly having my arm at a 45 or 90-degree angle. I am resting my elbow on my hip. My right arm is moving around more as it is “mousing” … so anyway, I checked out several types and read the reviews. I like to go on Amazon to read reviews on anything I’m thinking about getting as they are honest reviews (when you get the critical reviews is best). So I tried several different splints, the one I showed you and others with stays/splints, all a hard plastic, and people said the plastic broke, sometimes from rolling over in the middle of the night, or didn’t fit properly and many people said the plastic stay poked through the material on the inside of the splint. I looked at different price ranges – people had issues with the velcro closure (didn’t pull it tight enough or couldn’t put it on themself) or fell off and had to be sewn back on. People said cheaply made. I bought some more of those travel pillows to support my good shoulder as I’ve been doing since Fall so gong to see if I can put my arm between them at night. I’m not a back sleeper, prefer my side, so I will go to a health aids store and see if they can help out or even measure properly. Some of those places are only open during the week, not on weekends which is annoying. They said to wrap a towel around and an ace bandage maybe I will just start there and that can’t fall apart. It sounds logical to me if my arm is constantly bent (more so as a result of the blogging or just sitting at the computer too many hours in a day).

I agree with you and I need mostly to just keep my arm straight. I tried last night putting it between two little pillows – that is better, but I still roll over. I tried laying on my back, but I don’t always stay there. This morning I awoke with an ant bite and while I was in my room using the old computer, I got five ants in there (2 on the ceiling, 2 on the bed and one nervy one walking on the keyboard). I wanted to mention something that I forgot in another comment yesterday – you asked me about Ron bringing the laptops and setting up the new Windows 10 desktops — now Phase II he got the money for and ordered the new desktops and the accounting software last week. Still no Windows 10 laptop here as of this comment. As to the accounting software, our accounting program was put in in 2004. We had a brand new accounting program installed when we moved there in 2003, but it was buggy and we had to get a new version (it is technically the Timeslips 2005 but installed in 2004). So when our computer system crashed in 2010 and we got this computer guy to put everything together again (we lost nothing – no data, no accounting records, just our e-mail contacts – pretty good I’d say). Anyway, when he put everything together in 2010, Timeslips (made by Sage who also does Quickbooks) wanted a license for my computer at work, one for the server and a third one for me at home. Each license was around $500.00 and our computer guy said that I don’t use it at home, I remote into my desktop at work and it is not a stand alone software. They did not relent and so we kept our software and it is installed on the original Windows XP computer we got in 2003. We have taken off the internet because Windows XP is no longer protected from viruses since it is so old. So, Robb suggested that Ron (computer guy) get new Timeslips (my idea is “it is not broke, so why fix it?) and Ron said they could not transfer it to the new computer system. So, not only is it a version that is almost 15 years older than I’m used to, I have to input the client data (contact info/rates/style of bill, etc.) into the new Timeslips. I will use the old Timeslips as all the data is stored there – it is a pain and there was a software that migrated all the data to make it current, but not Timeslips and we decided not to use that … I will use the current accounting system until that is done and that could take a few months as I’ll do it when I have time at work (no rush to do it on my own time which I have very little of).

Re the ants, do you happen to have any plants in your house? My neighbour brought her tropical plant inside for the winter and in the spring her upstairs was infested with ants which had hibernated in the plants soil. Are they in other rooms in your house too? I would not like the idea of sleeping in a room with creepy-crawlies! The computer thing sounds like a nightmare. I always had an IT department to call if things went wrong, although they could not always fix it…..they were experts at saying, try this, it SHOULD work!

Watch the movie first……if you like period pieces. If I may make a comment on Shirley Valentine, I wasn’t a big fan of it, and I’m not sure why, but I guess it was because I feel like so many of these movies are all about getting a guy? or not being alone? Could she just not go on vacation and have a good time, enjoy the scenery and the adventure etc. I had the same problem with Eat Pray Love and look how that turned out, despite a subsequent book entitled Committed. It’s like you can’t have a happy ending in a book or a movie unless there is a man involved. I loved Frances Mayes Under The Tuscan Sun, but I when I read her recent novel Women In Sunlight, it was awful. How could a movie about four older women who move to Italy miss? I couldn’t even keep the characters straight, and of course they were all paired off at the end, with the creepiest of literary men, IMO. I wrote a review of it on goodreads, and got many comments so other people must have agreed with me. Just my opinion, coming from an 80’s feminist! PS. I haven’t seen Joan Collins in anything since Dynasty! I think period pieces like Downton Abbey and Enchanted April are more my style.

Thank you, will do! I don’t disagree with your sentiments on the guys in the movies, etc. I liked the Eat, Pray, Love, book for the most part, but I read it so long ago, I don’t remember. I try to focus on the ‘entertainment’ factor as much as I can. Or the videography or the scenes. I prefer a good book over a movie for the most part. Same with me, and I didn’t even watch Dynasty that much. Thank you for sharing your perspective!

I liked the Eat part of Eat Pray Love, (what does that say about me???), the Pray part was too new agey weird, and the Love part was forced – it was a long time ago, something about some older South American guy she ended up marrying and then divorced. As she had the book contract before she traveled maybe she felt pressured to give it a happy ending? Likewise with Shirley Valentine, was it from 1990? All I remember is she got duped by some Greek guy who used the same line on all the tourists.

I did like the Eat part the most too! And agree with the Pray. The love, I can’t remember much, so it must’ve been a ‘that figures’ kind of response from me. What I did like about Shirley is that she fought for herself and what she needed. She took a path I wouldn’t have, but the fight in her and Pauline’s delivery of her lines is what I enjoyed. The Greek guy was a scumbag, but she even made that work out to her advantage. I love that two people can watch the same movie and have different takeaways.
